Twenty20 cricket will soon be back in the spotlight, with the ICC Board deciding that one of the biggest cricket tournaments in the world will once again be the marquee event of the summer.
A huge chunk of the ICC’s revenue comes from the lucrative Twenty20 World Cup in Bangladesh, which has become a showcase for top players who want to showcase their skills at a higher level.
The tournament’s organisers, the International Cricket Council, are also looking at hosting the tournament in 2019.
But the board is keen to see big-name players in the tournament, particularly from South Africa and New Zealand.
The BCCI’s chief executive David Richardson said that the World Twenty19 tournament in India, which had been held since 2016, is a possibility.
Richardson said that while he could see some South African players making the cut, there was “no room” for South African stars in the 2020 World Twenty-20.
“If you look at the players who have been around, they have a lot of experience and they have played a lot.”
We are aware of that, and if you look back to the World Cup and the Ashes, South Africa have been a big part of that,” Richardson said.”
That is something we are looking at as a possibility.
“There has been no word yet on whether New Zealand will make the cut for the tournament.”
It’s something that’s been on our radar,” Richardson added.”
But I don’t want to comment on anything other than it’s a possibility in 2019, 2019 is our window.
“I’m not sure that we can rule it out, but it’s something we’ve looked at.”
The World Twenty6, which will be held in India in 2018, has also been floated as a potential option.
“You’ll be looking at 2019,” Richardson told the ABC.
“What I’d say is it’s not something we’re necessarily thinking about at the moment.”
As you know, we’re in the process of evaluating all options for 2019, and then I can’t say any more at this stage.
“Australia, England and Pakistan are among the other teams which have been mentioned as a possible World Twenty team, with an official announcement expected by the end of next month.”
All those players who are part of the team will play in the World T20, whether they’re in South Africa, New Zealand or India,” Richardson continued.”
The focus will be on the World Championship and then the World Cricket Council meeting.
“The ICC has also said that there are “no plans at this time” for the World Ten T20s to be held this year.
There will be more emphasis on the Twenty-Six format. “
It will be different from the previous one, and I think the format is going to be different as well,” Richardson revealed.
“There will be more emphasis on the Twenty-Six format.
There will be some tweaks to the format, so there’s going to have to be a bit of a learning curve there.”
For the first time, there will be no two-day format.
“The Twenty20 is set to be played from August to November, with teams from all over the world playing in the top four tiers.
The World Ten tournaments are being held in New Zealand, Australia, South Korea and India, with South Africa holding the tournament’s top ranking and New York City hosting the lower division matches.
Australia are ranked second in the table and are also in contention to win the tournament for the first year in a row.
They are in the midst of a difficult tour to New Zealand with a tough tour to India and a tough two-Test series against England.
The hosts will be looking to bounce back after losing a tense one-match series to the hosts in the series opener at Eden Park in November, but they are not too worried about the result.”
Our mindset is to make sure we’re playing our best cricket,” Richardson explained.”
So we want to play our best game.
“We want to put in a performance where we’ve got to be confident and we want our team to be at the top of their game.”
